What with all the massive movie, television, and comic book announcements at Comic-Con 2011, it was easy to overlook some of the animated superhero announcements, both in film and television.
DC, as per usual, had a pretty large showing with Green Lantern: The Animated Series video clips and announcements about their 2012-2013 schedule – including the animated adaptations of The Dark Knight Returns, Justice League: Doom, and The Killing Joke.
But Marvel’s slate, which included footage of Ultimate Spider-Man, was nothing to scoff at, either.

DARK KNIGHT RISES viral continues?

DARK KNIGHT RISES viral continues?: "
The new viral marketing campaign for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises began recently and Facebook may be the latest location.



Previously, the first shot of Tom Hardy as Bane popped up when the Twitter account, @TheFireRises, posted a link that sent fans to the films website. Now, three new videos have shown up on TheFireRises YouTube account, one of which holds a subliminal link that leads you to this Facebook Fan Page. The page features the same black image we see as the avatar on the YouTube and Twitter accounts but also holds the shot above. Could this be Gotham’s next D.A.?

The videos are the usual dramatic yet flashy incitement techniques. The first shows Anthony Michael Hall as part of a GCN broadcast talking about a breakout at Arkham Asylum plus police sounds. The second is a lot harder to make out. There’s people in orange prison uniforms being walked through a room with black bags over their heads and a lot of loud chanting. The last one shows…a lot of stuff on fire and more of the same chanting.

Whether the YouTube and/or Facebook channels turn out to be fake done by a fan, it’s still an interesting look. But if Warner Bros. reserved the Twitter account under that name, wouldn’t it stand to reason the other would have been reserved too? My only doubt is the Facebook page name is written out as The-Fire-Rises rather than TheFireRises but that could easily be a Facebook thing. Plus, last time they did this they didn’t go the usual routes and were a lot more cryptic. What do you guys think? Are you going to follow along with the viral campaign?

Hopefully this part won't have William Tell's Overture on the soundtrack.

With adaptations of NEW FRONTIER, UNDER THE HOOD and THE
DEATH OF SUPERMAN out there and dazzling the people, there was certainly a question
of when we’d to see two of the greatest BATMAN stories ever get similar treatment.
Bleeding Cool’s got a scoop that not only is a feature length toon version of YEAR
ONE in the works, so too will THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS gets its DTV due. It’ll surely be a spell before we see the DVD
or Blu-Ray of these on the shelves at the ol’ consumer electronics department
store. I can certainly imagine either coming out to coincide with the
release of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - - which
certainly would be apropos considering how, you know, it got the inspiration
for its title from Miller’s book.


All of these DC Animated projects have been pretty
remarkable for capturing the rendering style of the comics they’re based on. I
get a little giddy thinking about what Miller’s cartoonist art would look
like in motion. And, of course, I’d be remiss not to bring up one of the latter
episodes of BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES which actually featured a segment
recreating a couple key scenes from DKR. Having watched this episode on the
very Saturday morning it debuted, I’ve got to say that the prospect of seeing this aching
tease finally fulfilled is infinitely appealing…

I have no idea why I am so resistant to the idea that The Dark Knight Returns might be adapted into an animated movie, a la All-Star Superman. Is it because I thought that the animated version of A-SS replicated the action but missed the heart that made the original so special? Perhaps, but Dark Knight Returns is a shorter work than A-SS and also more weighted towards the action in the first place, so that might not be a problem. Maybe it’s that I can’t imagine DKR not being censored in some way, considering its content and what we’ve seen in the other animated movies… but perhaps I’m just being cynical about that. So why does it seem like such a bad idea?

Maybe it’s because it seems completely unnecessary. Has the world been crying out for this all along and I’ve not been paying attention? I feel the same way about this as I did the movie Watchmen: Isn’t the comic enough? Can’t something just be great as what it is, and the creators of the adaptations come up with something else, even if it’s something featuring the same characters? Unless Frank Miller somehow gets involved with this rumored animated version, I fear disaster (or worse, disasterous boredom) for this plan.
