New ‘Dark Knight Rises’, ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ & ‘Mission Impossible 4′ Images:



Two big upcoming comic book movies and one big blockbuster sequel -- Or maybe its two big IMAX experience sequels and a 3D reboot. However you want to categorize them, today we have new images from The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol to share.


As three of the biggest movie release on the horizon, there is literally plenty to see here -- including one last POTENTIAL SPOILER from The Dark Knight Rises Pittsburgh set.

First, we’ll talk about The Amazing Spider-Man. We’ve seen many images from the film already, including promo images of the new Spidey costume, set images of the stunt action we’ll see in the film, and more recently, official images that have provided insight into the overall look and tone of director Marc Webb’s take on Spidey. This is all in addition to the Amazing Spider-Man teaser trailer, which gave us a definitive look at the movie’s modern-day approach to the character.
In the midst of all this promotional hoopla, however, there has been a complaint (one of many) that fans have raised: a lack of iconic “Spidey poses.” Well, if that gripe has beenyour gripe, you’ll need to find a new one: today’s Amazing Spider-Man images are nothing BUT Spider-Man poses seemingly lifted from the comic book.

The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is almost done shooting in Pittsburgh, PA and I for one think that’s a good thing. So many set videos and Spoiler images leaked out of the Pittsburgh shoot that this third (and presumably final) chapter in Chris Nolan’ s Batman trilogy is virtually an open book in terms of its major action sequences and plot developments. That is, unless Nolan has fooled us all…
Of course, The Dark Knight Rises couldn’t leave the fine city of Pittsburgh without dropping at least one more spoilerific image and/or video -- and like other spoilers leaked from the set, this latest image is all about the Batman vehicles.
Check out a tumbler caught in one hell of a pothole, courtesy of Superhero Hype:

Now, recent set photos have revealed that bad-boy Bane (Tom Hardy) and his cohorts will have their own arsenal of Tumbler vehicles to use in their assault on Gotham City (they’re the camouflaged-colored models). The Tumbler pictured above is obviously of the Camo variety, which suggests that this is NOT another hit being taken by The Dark Knight, but rather part of his “rise” to hero status.
Moreover, it seems that this image has something to do with the recent Batwing chase sequence we saw being filmed. Is Tumbler pic a sample of how Batman lays his ariel smackdown? Check out the video of the Batwing chasing camo Tumblers down the street (courtesy of Subaru WRX Fan). It certainly seems like the wreckage we see above follows soon after.

Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol

The fourth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise is also a semi-reboot, which sees Tom Cruise’s secret agent Ethan Hunt and his IMF team going rogue to clear their names, after they are implicated as terrorists in the bombing of the Russian Kremlin. The “reboot” part comes into play when Cruise’s character hooks up with other secret agents -- particularly Jeremy Renner’s character, Brandt -- who may take the reigns of the franchise off Cruise’s well-worn hands.
The Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol trailer suggested that Cruise and his co-stars -- Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Ving Rhames and Josh Holloway -- will have some witty banter and engaging chemistry as an ensemble, and this new image echoes that sentiment with a picture of some of the IMF crew together looking very tense and distrustful (never trust anyone in spyland).

Every time I stare at one of these Hot Toys figures, I get chills. Everything from the photo realistic faces to the detailed accessories they include with each figure shouts quality. Of course, they also happen to be among the most expensive toys on the market. Hot Toys offered up this special edition Bruce Wayne in Batsuit 12 inch collectible as a toy fair exclusive earlier this year, but will also be making it available via Sideshow Collectibles this October. The figure features the visage of Christian Bale and comes modeled after his appearance in Nolan’s Batman Begins, however the head comes with an interchangeable cowl along with several different mouths to swap out. There’s also a ton of accessories included such as bombs, boots, gauntlets, interchangeable hands, and batarangs among others. Sideshow is asking $225 for pre-orders, and the supply is limited so its only one per customer. Too expensive? Bruce Wayne could afford it.

Both Batman and Superman have major motion pictures currently in the works – Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel – and that’s not even including the proposed Justice League film, which will showcase both Batman, Superman, and a number of other major DC superheroes.

Now there’s a rumor going around that there’s a another film in the works that will utilize both Batman and Superman, which, for simplicity’s sake, will heretofore be referred to as Batman/Superman.

The stories we read in comic books encompass more than super heroes fighting crime, solving mysteries and flying through outer space in action filled panels. While all of these things contribute to the excitement, there is one element in comics that some people might have some difficulty in admitting that they enjoy -- the romance.

Many readers may not confess to enjoying the romantic aspect of comics even though sometimes the romance is what drives the story and makes it interesting. I don't mind raising my hand and being the first to admit that it's the romance that has piqued my interest sometimes, and I'm not alone either. In an interview about her recent books, X-23 writer and romance novelist Marjorie Liu delved into the importance of romance to a story.

.'..As a writer, I'm not afraid of playing with intimacy. There are many different ways to express intimacy -- a look, a touch -- and I think it enriches the characters and stories when you create those moments, and then build on them.

She's right. So often the romance between characters plays out in unsuspecting ways and makes the reader feel more invested in the story. Romance can often become the driving force behind the stories and the characters, giving the characters a purpose for their actions. So now that I've just spent way too much time trying to defend the fact that I like mushy/kissy stuff in comics, I should probably go into why I decided to write about mushy/kissy stuff in the first place.

Early Monday DC revealed all of the upcoming covers and solicitations to the second issues of their Batman books, which if you haven't already seen you can check out here. What I noticed was that some of these stories contradict one another. Namely the solicits for Tony Daniel's Batman Detective #2 and Judd Winick's Catwoman #2.
In the upcoming revamped Batman: Detective Comics series Bruce is set to explore a 'budding relationship with television reporter Charlotte Rivers who is in Gotham City' investigating the Gotham Ripper murders. Meanwhile, in Catwoman, '[Batman and Catwoman] ...should keep each other at arm's length, but...they just can't seem to help themselves!' Okay, Bruce, which one is it going to be? The wannabe Vicki Vale (I know, I shouldn't judge her until I read it) or master cat burglar Selina Kyle? I guess since he's Batman he can have his cake and eat it too, right?
The possibility of introducing a new romantic love interest for Bruce makes sense. Bruce Wayne is supposed to be a playboy, he's supposed to attract the ladies by day and crime fight by night (even if these romantic rendesvous tend not to leave a lasting impression). However, if there's anything that tops my list of things I hope to see carry over into this new DC Universe come September it has to be that spark between Batman and Catwoman. What makes their involvement so interesting is that it's so fleeting. It's spontaneous, dangerous and exciting -- because that's what both of these characters are. Not only is the dynamic of their relationship interesting but Batman and Catwoman also have a very long history together, so to throw that out the window would be a damn shame.
Catwoman first appeared in Batman #1 in July of 1940 and she has ever since been a staple in the Batman universe. After first seeing Batman injured, Selina decided that if Batman can put on a costume and fight crime, then she can don on a costume and become a criminal. Thus, Catwoman was born and she has ever since posed a challenge to Bruce Wayne. Catwoman's history since her inception has evolved and varied over the years. At one point Selina even married Bruce Wayne -- but that version of herself (Golden Age Selina) was eventually moved to DC's Earth Two and a new version was set in place. She's been an orphan, a flight attendant, a prostitute and the daughter of the infamous Falcone crime family (or at least that's been implied). However, if there is one thing that has remained constant is that she has been in love with Batman, and he's sort of had a thing for her too.

In the recent Heart of Hush story arc Batman confessed that he did indeed love Selina, and while I am glad that we got to see that before September's big DC revamp, I still hold hope that these two characters will continue to entertain their affections for one another. David Finch's Batman: The Dark Knight Won't be in Limbo Much Longer

David Finch's Batman: The Dark Knight Won't be in Limbo Much Longer: "
When it was revealed that artist David Finch would be leaving Marvel comics following an incredible run on Marvel's X-Men: Second Coming story arc fans were definitely caught by surprise. The artist revealed that he would be leaving Marvel for an exclusive contract with DC Comics. This contract limited him to covers and one very top secret project for DC; Batman: The Dark Knight.

The book was first announced a year ago (last summer) and it was revealed that Finch had already finished up the first arc in what was supposed to be his own ongoing series. Unfortunately, however, David Finch fans did not get to see the comic book series written and penciled by Finch--at least not on time. The series launched with the release of the first issue in September of 2010, but fans didn't see Batman: The Dark Knight #2 until May of 2011. So, what happened?
In an interview with Newsarama back in July of last year Finch revealed that he had completed the first story arc and was just starting to work on the second.

Nrama: Have you picked a title for the series? Or the first story?
Finch: Yes, the book is called Batman: The Dark Knight. The first story is all written, and it leads into the second, which is in the planning stages right now.

Nearly a year later DC is finally bringing the third issue of Batman: The Dark Knight to stores this Wednesday, July 13th. DC also revealed the preview of the issue due out this week earlier today and based on the solicit the book continues to tell the story of Bruce Wayne, Batman and his childhood friend Dawn Golden. You can check out the story below.
So what is up with the major delay on this book? The interview with Finch made it seem things were well underway and that the first arc was already in the bag. Understandably it can be attributed to a number of different things, but I would venture to guess that this may have a little bit to do with the revamp of the new DC Universe which is set to launch this September, 2011. We posted some of the covers and the accompanying solicits to the upcoming 52 new titles earlier, so be sure to check them out here if you haven't already. The good news is that Finch's Batman: The Dark Knight won't be stranded in comic book limbo and is set to start over in September beginning with issue #1 as part of the 52 new ongoing titles.
It seems like Finch had a pretty solid understanding of what he wanted to do with the story and where he wanted to take it based on a variety of different interviews.

If I could be so bold as to draw a comparison, I would want to associate it with Neal Adams and Denny O'Neil's work from the early '70s. It's a street level book, very hands on, down and dirty. That's just more my style. But Dark Knight will take Batman in a bit of a darker direction. He's going to be dealing with mysticism, dark arts, and demonology. All things that are well outside of his comfort zone. The challenge for Batman will be to pit his brains and grim determination against forces that defy logic and fear. But he's a fast learner, and he'll have help... The Demon [Etrigan] plays an ongoing part in the book. Jason Blood is very helpful to Batman when it comes to understanding his enemy. But Jason has his own allegiances to worry about. Helping Batman puts him at direct odds with his masters. Alfred, Gordon and the usual cast are heavily featured, along with characters from other Batman titles.

So how much of Finch's vision for his initial series will carry over into the relaunch of Batman: The Dark Knight? Finch initially stated that he wanted a 'dark and gothic' feel to his Batman book, and it will be interesting to see if that's something prevalent this September starting with Batman: The Dark Knight #1. Be sure to look for issue #3 of Batman: The Dark Knight this Wednesday written and penciled by David Finch as well as issues #4 and #5 due to hit July 27th and August 24th respectively.

We all know the story of how Bruce Wayne became Batman. As a young child, he witnessed the murder of his parents when they were held up in an alley. Since that moment, he made a vow to the spirit of his dead parents that he would spend the rest of his life warring on all criminals.

How is that going for him? Batman has spent most of his life with his war against crime. He has spent countless hours and a good chunk of his fortune for the sake of others as well as numerous personal sacrifices over the years. Has he made any progress? Has the amount of crime in Gotham City increased or decreased? Since Batman's been on the scene, more and more crazed costumed criminals have surfaced.
Batman might be fully committed to this war, but how long can he stay committed to this never-ending battle?

Saying Batman is obsessed would be an understatement. In Darwyn Cooke's EGO story, we see that Batman actually questions his lack of being able to change Gotham.
The question of how much good Batman does or how much damage he's caused has been a topic of debate for years.
There was corruption in the police force before Batman surfaced. Is that something that can be attributed to his vigilante ways? It's clear that it was Jim Gordon that put an end to the corruption and turned the police department around. He had an ally in Batman but it was Jim that had to do the hard work in the department.
Batman may be a magnet for costumed criminals but what about the heroes and sidekicks he's inspired and helped shape? He's had some successes with Dick Grayson, Tim Drake and Barbara Gordon. There has also been some...mistakes like Jason Todd or Azrael.
But I don't want to go on about any faults he may have. The fact is Batman is fighting a never-ending battle. There will always be a new threat no matter how many times he defeats his enemies. We all know there's no way to keep them permanently locked away.

Is this the life Batman is fated to have? Will he have to continue fighting until he is no longer able to? Will he ever know or allow himself to know any sort of happiness?
We've seen a future possibility with Batman Beyond. Bruce is practically a defeated old man. How disturbing is that first episode where he fails to nab the kidnapper and almost has to resort to using a gun. He ends up living alone in Wayne Manor...well, except for Ace, his dog.
Batman will never allow himself to be happy. He will never settle down. He knows that any moment he's sitting at the beach or having a picnic means time away from fighting or making plans against the forces of evil.
Batman may have victories when he does (at least temporarily) take villains off the streets. How can that be enough?
Yes, Batman made a vow to his dead parents to fight crime for the rest of his life but when is it time for Bruce to live? Is this what his parents would have wanted?
What it comes down to is it wasn't just Thomas and Martha Wayne that died that night in the alley. Bruce Wayne died as well. Batman was born that night and he will continue to fight crime until his last breath.

The first seven issues of the hot new series are collected in this new, deluxe edition hardcover!

The first seven issues? Of a ten issue series? With a very, very clear breakpoint built in after the sixth issue? I wonder what that means for the chances of collection for those final three issues – for that matter, does a seven issue collection hint at some editorial concern that the book will manage to ship its remaining four issues within the next three months? (It’s due to double ship in August, to round out the current run) – or should we expect to see those three collected with the debut issues of the “second season,” due to start at some point in 2012?

With DC proudly announcing that the relaunched Batman titles (So far Batman, Detective, Batman and Robin and Batman: The Dark Knight) will feature Bruce Wayne as “the one true Batman,” it’s certainly looking like Grant Morrison’s Batman, Incorporated has been dumped in favor of a new back-to-basics status quo. But, according to IGN, Morrison is “involved in the September relaunch, and an announcement will be coming later this week,” which means… something, right?

It’s interesting to see that the DC representative isn’t saying that Morrison is involved in the Batman side of the relaunch, just the “September relaunch” in general. There are still rumors of his being involved with a Superman book, but we’ve already had similar rumors of a Wonder Woman gig turn out to be false, and now Bleeding Cool is reporting that George Perez will be heading up the Superman relaunch, which leads me to wonder where Morrison will end up in the current creative reshuffle.

Not all of Morrison’s Batman work is being undone – Damien is staying as Robin, interestingly enough – but I’m wondering whether we’ll see Batman, Incoporated not reappear anywhere in the September relaunch, and instead show up later in the year as a stand-alone, out of continuity, series continuing Morrison’s two-year storyline until completion. Certainly, this would fit in with previous Morrison work (All-Star Superman, anyone?), and give Morrison not only the chance to finish up with his plans, but also the freedom to make whatever changes he wants without having to worry about upsetting core fanbases of the characters he’s writing. It would mean that DC would backtrack somewhat from the line-wide relaunch, sure, but we’ve already got at least two other out-of-continuity Batman series (All-Star Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder, AKA Dark Knight: Boy Wonder and Neal Adams’ Batman Odyssey) awaiting conclusion, so the idea of one more doesn’t seem too impossible, does it? I mean, is this really any less likely that DC just killing one of their most successful titles so readily?

Comic readers often have discussion on who the better hero is or what would it be like if one little event happened differently. With the current Flashpoint storyline, we are getting a little of both. Of all the different versions and incarnations of the DC heroes we're seeing, it's Batman's story that intrigues me the most.
Of course we all know Batman's origin. Young Bruce Wayne went to the theater with his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne. Afterwards, they cut across what would later be known as Crime Alley and were held up by a mugger. When the thug grabbed for Martha's pearl necklace, Thomas made his move and they were both shot and killed. Witnessing the murder of his parents, young Bruce would dedicate the rest of his life trying to rid the world of evil.

But what if things happened differently? What if instead, it was Martha and Bruce that were killed. What would Thomas do to recover from this horrific event? Making the assumption that he too would make a vow against evil and become a vigilante himself, there's a good chance he would also create a Batman persona. Like father, like son, right? Who would make a better Batman, Bruce or Thomas?

Thomas had worn a Batman-type costume before and the caves beneath Wayne Manor (along with all the bats) would give him the inspiration to become Batman just like Bruce. We know how losing his parents affected Bruce and how dedicated he became afterwards. I think it could be different for Thomas. A father losing his wife and child would be more than enough to push someone over the edge. Clearly this would result in a different kind of Batman.
The disadvantage Thomas would have is he wouldn't have the opportunity of training during his youth. He was a rich doctor and business man. Bruce had his teen years and early adulthood to study and travel the world to become the world's greatest detective. Thomas might have a harder time explaining his worldly travels.

Once he became Batman, Thomas would handle things differently. Even though Bruce was completely focused, he still had a softer side to him. While seeing and knowing the pain Dick Grayson would go through, he wanted to help him through it as well as have a partner in fighting crime. From what we've seen of Thomas, I can't really see him taking a kid sidekick. It would almost be like trying to replace his lost son. That in itself makes you wonder what would happen to Dick Grayson in a world like this? It's the whole Butterfly Affect. One little event could result in drastic changes.
Bruce has shown a violent side on occasion but Thomas would not hold back. We saw in Flashpoint #1 when a costumed criminal he was questioning didn't have the answers he was looking for, he allowed her to accidentally slip from the rooftop. Thomas would see that the idea of locking up the criminal insane is not an efficient solution. They would just escape and ruin more lives. Thomas as Batman would believe in more permanent solutions.
Bruce played the playboy to hide his alter ego. He made sure Wayne Enterprises was successful to further provide his cover as well as provide the means to build the technology and gadgets he would need to wage his war against crime.

Thomas' solution was to open and run a casino in Gotham. The casino would be a way to draw the criminal element to him. You know the saying about keeping your enemies closer.
If Thomas is willing to go to more drastic and permanent means, does that make him a better crimefighter? Would becoming a judge, jury and executioner be a way to keep the criminal scum off the streets and prevent them from escaping custody and starting all over again? Bruce is against killing but Thomas is a man that has lost his family. Bruce wants to be a good man fighting evil. Thomas seems to only be concerned with wiping out evil. If he has to get his hands dirty, I wouldn't see him losing sleep over it.
Thomas might get stronger results but with each life he allows to slip away, regardless of their evil nature, he drifts further and further away from the loving husband and father he used to be. Bruce often works alone but he does have close associates that have become his family. He still has a touch with being human. That connection is what reminds him and drives him to doing everything possible to protect the innocent.

This Batcave is pretty cold and barren.

Both Batmen would be successful crimefighters in their own way. Thomas may put a permanent end to some of the criminals he faces but there will always be more. Criminals may be a superstitious and cowardly lot but they are also obsessed with revenge. Killing the associates of criminals will only make them want to get the person responsible and would try doing so with greater numbers. Bruce is able to work with others. He might be obsessed but he has allowed himself to remain some of his humanity. His Bruce Wayne persona may be an act but he is able to pull off the human interaction. Thomas doesn't appear to be able to or want to bother.
Thomas may believe in trying to get harder and quicker results but all he's managed to do is turn Gotham City into a bigger cesspool. Bruce Wayne's Gotham at least has it's shining spots. Thomas may believe in showing no mercy towards the criminals but there's only a thin line that separates him from those he's hunting down. It's great seeing this completely badass Batman take on the criminals but Bruce Wayne is clearly the better Batman.

DC Announces New Batman Revamp Titles and Creators: "

The DC revamp titles news continues. Today (courtesy of IGN), we're getting some exciting news. It's all about Batman. It's almost crazy if you think about it, we will all have a chance to own Batman #1 and Detective Comics #1. Detective Comics is what brought about DC's name. Will this re-numbering stick? Honestly, that's not really the point right now. Let's just focus on what we're going to be getting.
Batman #1 will be written by the great Scott Snyder (hot of the pages of Detective Comics) along with art by Greg Capullo (who is known for working on Spawn and Haunt).
Detective Comics #1 will have Tony Daniel doing both the writing and the art. Interesting that Daniel and Snyder are switching titles. Both Batman and Detective will feature Bruce Wayne as Batman. According to IGN, Bruce Wayne will be the only character wearing the Batman suit. That means, Batman Incorporated is finished?
Batman and Robin #1 will feature Bruce and Damian written by Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason. Father and son fighting crime together. It should be really interesting to see how Damian works with his dad. He and Dick have started developing a good relationship and I wonder if Damian will follow orders better now.
Batman: The Dark Knight #1 will continue with David Finch. There's no assurance whether or not Finch's original story will see completion.
What else is there?
Those were the official announcements. Bleeding Cool has shown images for an unconfirmed (so far) Catwoman #1 (art by GUillem March) along with Nightwing #1 (art by Eddy Barrows). Guess we know why Bruce is the only one wearing the Batman suit.
