L.A. Noire Dev's Contentious Relationship with Rockstar Revealed

L.A. Noire Dev's Contentious Relationship with Rockstar Revealed: "

L.A. Noire

An IGN report last month revealed the allegedly awful working conditions at Team Bondi during the lengthy development of L.A. Noire. Studio founder Brendan McNamara was said to be an incredibly angry individual and there were allegations of excessively long work hours that went unpaid, employees being berated, and more. McNamara didn't outright deny some of these things, instead simply putting a different spin on it than that of the anonymous former employees.

Two more former employees have now come forward and offered up further evidence of the allegations, primarily in the form of internal e-mails. Speaking with the author of the original piece for a GamesIndustry.biz report, they also highlight the contentious relationship that Bondi grew to have with Rockstar and how the two are unlikely to work together again.

'It's pretty well reported now that the working conditions were bad. What hasn't been discussed yet (from what I've seen) is the relationship between Team Bondi and Rockstar,' one source wrote. 'I've heard a lot about Rockstar's disdain for Team Bondi, and it has been made quite clear that they will not publish Team Bondi's next game. Team Bondi are trying to find another publisher for their next title, but the relationship with Rockstar has been badly damaged -- Brendan treats L.A. Noire like a success due to his vision but I think Rockstar are the ones who saved the project. They continued to sink money into LA Noire, and their marketing was fantastic. Without their continued support, Team Bondi would have gone under several years ago.'

Rockstar splits with Team Bondi - Report

Rockstar splits with Team Bondi - Report: "
Leaked emails detail depth of acrimony between L.A. Noire developer and publisher; next Team Bondi game not coming through Rockstar.

It has been clear the development of LA Noire was troubled, with the International Game Developers Association recently describing reports of working conditions at Team Bondi, the Australian studio behind the game, as 'absolutely unacceptable.' Emails revealed to industry site GamesIndustry.biz have laid bare more troubles at the house responsible for the development of the most expensive game ever to come out of the antipodean nation.

'I've heard a lot about Rockstar's disdain for Team Bondi, and it has been made quite clear that they will not publish Team Bondi's next game,' an unnamed source said to GI.biz. 'Rockstar used to be very keen on making Team Bondi something like 'Rockstar Sydney'--the more they worked with Team Bondi management, the more they came to understand that this was a terrible idea.'

The leaked emails detail the frustrations of senior management, with studio head Brendan McNamara saying 'I'll never forget being treated like an absolute **** by these people,' in reference to L.A. Noire branding that omitted Team Bondi branding. The emails also confirm the issues with working conditions that had been previously reported, with seven-day weeks of 12-hour days being standard in early 2009, more than two years before the game's eventual release.

L.A. Noire was first revelated in 2004, and was initially rumoured to be PlayStation exclusive; Rockstar snapped up the title in 2006. Speaking at the time, McNamara said, 'The longstanding mutual respect and the combined experience between the two of us make this a great partnership.'

Former Team Bondi employees dish on LA Noire's troubled development

Former Team Bondi employees dish on LA Noire's troubled development: "

Perfection comes at a price, kid, and payday ain't for weeks. Capisce?

LA Noire spent seven years in fiery development Hell under production by Team Bondi, and now the gritty details about its tumultuous birth are surfacing like a quick glance away on a pretty face. Following dozens of reports of inhumane work conditions, 60-hour weeks and extreme turnover, IGN Australia contacted 11 unnamed former Team Bondi employees and bossman Brendan McNamara for the lowdown on developing LA Noire Down Under.

One recurring point of contention was overtime: 'No overtime was officially paid in the three years and three months that I worked at Team Bondi,' one of the anonymous former employees said. McNamara responded to this complaint (and many others), saying Team Bondi had overtime pay in place, 'but contractually, we don't have to do that.'

Another anonymous source described McNamara as a '24/7 corpse grinder with perpetual crunch and weekend overtime.' McNamara didn't seem to have a response to that one. Read all of the complaints and McNamara's rebuttals in the full interview.

Asperger's expert recommends L.A. Noire as teaching tool

Asperger's expert recommends L.A. Noire as teaching tool: "

Though our expertly crafted guide to L.A. Noire may be invaluable, there's one group who may still be struggling: Those living with Asperger's syndrome. Though the autism-spectrum disorder leaves cognitive and linguistic functions relatively preserved, it leaves some with what's sometimes referred to as mind-blindness, or the inability to divine what's happening in the mind of another human. In the words of researcher and coiner of the phrase Simon Baron-Cohen, those with mind-blindness find they have an inability to 'put themselves into someone else's shoes, to imagine their thoughts and feelings.'

In L.A. Noire, facial animations are so realistically captured that players can actually tell if their interview subjects are lying. In fact, players have to do precisely that to unearth the clues essential to putting a case together.

As we progressed through the game, we worried that could leave those with mind-blindness unable to play along, especially if the technology is more widely adopted. But where we saw a hurdle, Professor Tony Attwood sees opportunity.

Are you playing L.A. Noire in black and white?

Are you playing L.A. Noire in black and white?: "

You might miss it if you don't know to look for it, but right there in the options for L.A. Noire you can activate a 'black and white mode.' The resulting look is reminiscent of the classic films the game attempts to emulate.

"We always knew we would create a proper noir mode with the black & white setting for L.A. Noire considering how much inspiration for the game came from classic noir films like The Naked City and The Asphalt Jungle," art director Rob Nelson told us. "Playing in black & white adds a somewhat nostalgic, cinematic feel to the game, and we'd definitely recommend that players experiment with this setting and see what they prefer best."

That got us wondering: Which mode are you using? For our part, we liked the monochrome look, but kept feeling like we were missing something by not playing in color. Fill us in on your preference after the break.

L.A. Noire launch trailer is all good cops and grimaces: "

Being a good cop in '40s-era Los Angeles isn't as simple as sticking to the book. If L.A. Noire's launch trailer is any indication, detectives will need to rely and relay a lot on his face. Specifically, that look he gets whenever he bite into a lemon.

LA Noire: The Collected Stories bound in eBook form this June

LA Noire: The Collected Stories bound in eBook form this June: "

See now, this is confidence.

LA Noire's exploration of the seedy, criminal underbelly of a big city through the eyes of a hard-boiled detective is something pretty special in the gaming world. But in books? There are maybe one or two with a similar premise. Just a few.

But a crowded marketplace isn't keeping 2K and Rockstar from releasing L.A. Noire: The Collected Stories through eBook services on June 6. The anthology collects Hollywood tales from authors like Megan Abbott, Joyce Carol Oates and Jonathan Santlofer that share not only the game's 1940s setting but also some of its characters.

If you'd like a taste of what to expect, you can find a sample of Megan Abbott's 'The Girl' right here.
