Johnson's Journal #11 - BBC vs. America's Got bullshit

I've always appreciated british television - from "Monty Python" to "Fawlty Towers" to "Benny Hill" to "The office" there's been the lure of not only how the other half live (and what do they find funny) but to see how fresh and open their take on things are.

Lately, mostly because of my hard-on for netflix & hulu plus (after tiring of the ass raping cable so generously offers without lube) I've been watching alot of the BBC shows.

While we are watching shit like "So you think you can glee at american's who've got the xfactor voice" - the BBC offer up shows of quality like "Luthor", "Misfits", "MI5" & "Skins". The last of which couldnt even be shown here in syndication bcuz we couldnt get our panties out of our asses. "Skins" was deemed to controversial & parents complained enough to Mtv (a station that at one time had balls) so they pulled it - because we can't have teens watching teens fuck & do drugs - they might start.

We have this bury our heads in the sand approach to what we watch that really hinders the possiblity for a show to be great.

Watching the BBC is like watching mini movies - with swearing & nudity & unpredicable outcomes that stays with you long after the the tune glee just reproduced & butchered fades away.

But who's fault is it - the money grubbing douche bags that put the shit out -- or the mindless idiots that support these- "where are they now, use to be famous, wannabe famous, hey lets play already hits songs on a show with pretty kids - that suppose to be about average kids and piss in the ear of any dickheads that've given up thinking for themselves" bullshit they call entertainment.

BOTH!

Check out the shows I mentioned & judge for yourself - unless youre a watcher of those jackass shows - then just sit and wait for your next spoonfull of shit.

Peace

Johnson's Journal #7 - Sounds of Silence

Johnson's Journal # 7

Heard in an interview yesterday where the great Quincy Jones stated that the recording industry will be done in a decade due to 90% of all music downloaded illegally.

An innovating trendsetter for decades - you have to believe that there may be a bit of truth to that - But it didnt take a genius to have seen the writing on the wall.

He went on to say that people in the industry are "head in the sand"ing it as if its all gonna go away.

I remember back when Lars from Metallica headed up the lawsuit against napster that I thought "something needed to be considered" because the change was inevitable. I remember experts propheting the same - but it was ignored.

(By everyone except maybe Apple.)

Would better pricing & incentives have kept people around?

Could we have converted some of the music stores like HMV & TOWER into downloading hubs with even better pricing options if used - while coffee is served?

How about being able to download live music at concerts for exclusive ticket purchaser only specials?

Nope - none of that was done. Whats left? new questions:

Where will the music come from?
What does it do to further (if at all) damage our economy?
How will the new distribution directly from the talent be delivered?

I dont feel bad for the talentless fat cats that have grown rich on the backs of the blessed - its classic "chickens coming home to roust" - but doesnt it feel like when we got home computers, walkman's - ipods just on a grander scale?

This isnt as big a deal to younger people I'm sure - I attribute that to the frequency of change in the "today".

When I was younger - things had greater stablility - now you'd be lucky to hear a second single, from a group you thought had potential. Funny thing is its not even a sad footnote to me. Music is suffering on the mainstream level the same way things do that you tape and lick stick together to save money - it eventually comes tumbling down.

Peace

Johnson's Journal #6 Out Of The Box

For all the greater access we have to the rest of the world via the internet & other varies forms of communication - I can't help but feel we're more isolated than ever.

Why?

When I was young, most of the exposure I had to new things was either by accident or recommendation from a friend. Now due to my age and my choice to text rather than talk
conversations are limited to specific topics of the moment.

With netflix, hulu & dvr - you rarely get those "oh this was on or advertised so heavily I just decided
To watch it" moments.

No, now most of the stuff we watch is by our specific choice at the time we designate.

Whats my point?

I at one time felt I had my finger on the pulse of the way things went and because of (again) both my age & my "entertainment by selection" settings - am only exposed to what I determine is worth it.

What am I missing.

And if nothing else - by opening the world have we somehow boxed ourselves in.

Peace.

Johnson's Journal #5 X-Men First Class Review

WARNING: DO NOT KNOW READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU HAVE A DESIRE TO SEE THIS FILM

For the first time in years (think the last one was Tim Burton's Batman back in '89) I went to a midnight showing. This time it was xmen first class.

It wasn't long enough.

I didnt love it. I wanted to love it. I didn't love it.

Why?

It made (fewer) but some of the same mistakes as the trilogy. To be clear I didn't hate this movie.

Was it better than any of the trilogy? (heh, I call it a trilogy but only cause there were 3 movies - not because they carried any weight) YES.

Was it a great X-Men movie? NO.

Is it an enjoyable film? YES.

You will be able to enjoy it for what it is - a summer movie - But what I wanted - what I expected was not just a movie. I wanted & kinda needed an experience. I got a movie. On par with Thor - it was solid but I wont be talking about it for years to come with fellow nerds at the comic shop or next convention.

McAvoy & Fassbender were great - they sold it - (and I couldnt stop thinking of how perfect Fassbender could be as next bond. Rumor)

Bacon was equally great - not how I envisioned Shaw for all the years I had been reading X-men  books - but a kool (thats how I spell cool) version of him.

He could've come in - not taken it as seriously and have his iconic status over run the part - but he really showed up.

Lets start with the opening - a redo shot for shot of Magneto's intro in the first film was how it opened then cutting to Prof. X. as a boy meeting Mystique for the first time. She has broken into his mansion looking for food, he catches her and they become life long buddies living together.

From here it goes fast fwd to adulthood and into where Erik is hunting for a german doctor thats killed his mother to tortured him into releasing his power.

(Did I mention for some reason that the doctor is Kevin Bacon as Shaw but he looks older than he does later as Shaw?)

Kind of an odd twist to the Shaw origin but I guess nec to give Erik motive to join up with Charles in his crusade to stop the hellfire club.

I'm not going to go thru the film step by step with you - just some of the keys points.

The GOOD:

Acting overall by the "bigs" was very good as I said - seeing a young flirting Charles was interesting, seeing a not as sure of himself Erik was great. The cameos - REALLY COOL.

The trailers for GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO & RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES!!

The BAD:

The kids were kinda empty to me - and I didnt understand some of the casting.

I thought they were going with these specific characters to add to the canon of history - (the kids I'm talking about only) but there was no greater point - so why even pick characters out of continuity like Havok? - who is Scott (cyclops') younger brother? Unless there was gonna be a reason.

The casting of Zoe Kravitz - though not awful just a useless character and it couldve been given to a better actress. Again - the character didn't have a purpose. The guy who plays Darwin seemed miscast - not to mention also useless. Intro an amazing ability like his then not even use it. He dies pretty quick & dumb - rousing a laugh from the audience about the black guy dying. As a matter of fact with both Darwin & Angel it just seemed like a quota was being filled.

Banshee, Beast & Mystique - I understand why these characters were in it but acting from all these kids weak overall.

Anyway - the story had potental to be deep & epic but they montage thru most of it - just skimming the surface - which I thought - "then why take on such a big endevor as the cuban missile crisis?"
.
Character development was poor - something I've seen from Vaughn in the past - including "Kick-ass"

Most importantly - and this really sticks to you - if ur gonna do a period piece - especially the 60s make the movie feel like its in the 60s!

The sound track doesn't even take you there. (Again I liked this movie - but I wanted to love it & I'm being knit-picky)

And my final BAD: - The action (that takes forever to get to) I dont know if it was Singer's involvement or what but they still didnt get it right.

Thats enough beating it up.

All that said - one of the better superhero films produced - just not NERD approved - GO SEE IT ANYWAY but be ready.

Peace

Johnson Journal #4 Depth Perception

A few years back I owned a business,  which fortunately fell in line with my "life plan" (& dream) of having a business by the time I was 35 - in New York - & that resonated my vision of cool.

Well, after a bad experience in a establishment that was a great idea but had the staff from dickville - I had an epiphany.

Sometime later, some manuvering & an extremely generous investor, I opened my little piece of heaven.

16 hr days - 7 days a week - near relationship break-up - stress & constant frustration - I had never been happier in my life.

Sadly, due to my poor planning & immense lack of experience it closed as so many businesses do in the first year.

When I had to close "her" down, it broke me - for months I wasn't even able to move. Not until a year or 2 ago had I even been able to talk about it.

Reason being, because all I'd seen was my failure, my loss - my impotence as a businessman.

Not until my best friend showed me the ere of my ways could I see what the point truly was.

She said that some people never even get to have their dreams physically realized - failure or not - you got to cross that finish line - for however brief the moment.

No it wasnt the insane success you wanted to be - but it was - & that in itself is the accomplishment. How many people do you know say someday?

Some might say "it was better just in my head"

Those are the ones that have never had it in their hand.

Peace

Johnson's Journal #3 - Baby Daddy

If another person tells me I'd make a good father I'm gonna punch them in the face.

"Some people would take that as a compliment Ed"

Yeah those be the same dickheads with a low sperm count, self esteem or just a bad case of small cocks (that last one is a new disease I made up - giggle)

Look, yeah its a compliment & thanks - but honestly - how do you know?

Why? because you've never seen me lurking around a school at recess or wandering away holding some 9 yr olds hand?

Or cause I'm not a priest? (ouch)

I have no experience being a father - I didnt even have a father!

How excited would you same fucks be to if it was my first time behind the wheel and I was going to take on those mountainous narrow roads nears cliffs audi uses to make their car look more exotic - no? No riders?

Or how bout if I said I'd never made that poisous blow fish dish - what not as much confidence now? - nobody want a bite?

No - lets give the guy a life!

Tell you what - I'll have one if you commit to taking over guardianship should do any of the following:
  • drop it
  • neglect it
  • forget to feed it
  • abuse it
I pick those because its what I do to myself!

No - stop encouraging the incompetent to breed aren't you tired of standing behind, dating or working for the product of that mistake?

People need a license to drive a prius' - a car that's equivalent to those playskool battery operated toy cars but every Billy Bob, Tyrone, Jose, Wing Lee, & John is allowed to look after a human being.

No - No kids for me thanks - maybe when I grow up (Ed is currently 40 years of age)

Peace

Johnson's Journal #2 - Office Politics

I was having a conversation with my friend  - Con (co-host of the podcast) about the politics at work & the avoidance of  people that seek to entrench you into what is obviously an on going rift that has long preceded you.

The embittered - that hate everything about the place but are there bright and early.

Like vampires they descend on you attempting to add you to their army of hate before the other side can sink their teeth.

You somehow now have to navigate your way through a minefield of history without mis-stepping & having the mongers mistake your "I don't want to get involved" stance appear as if you're siding with the opposing force.

My particular war had to do with a boss that brought me on from previous situations into yet another place where he was disliked (a pattern for him)

Me, I'd established a happy medium with him - I understand his flaws - learned to ignore and grow beyond them - problem is - everyone I now work with are at the point I was when I first met him.

A deep loathing.

Trust me he can be an overbearing jerk & initially you want to kill him - but if you can eat enough of his quirks you'll get a very loyal person that'll consider you on future endeavors.

You just have to find a way around the maggots.

Anyway, as I said - his M.O. had been to alienate immediately - & this place was no different. I spend the day listening to the gripes of the folks that haven't gotten to know him like I have.  Maybe I should rephrase - tolerate him like I have.

I understand their frustration with him but also know there will be no changes on the horizon that'll help them to move forward.

I am by no means someone that needs people to like him - so - if it got to a point where I had had enough of the bitching - people will know - but I get where they're coming from and sympathize -  but I also get that he is who he is & to a degree respect that.

All in all I guess I just wish "misery" could learn to live alone.

Peace

Johnson's Journal #1 - Be mindful of what you have

I had a completely fine working phone & simply because I could, started shopping for a new one.

Before I bought one though - I was wisely talked out of it by my friend who pointed out that I had several months left on my contract and didnt really need to spend needlessly on something so frivolously.
(yes it was a she)

Anyway,  I decided that if I couldnt get a new phone I was gonna get the latest update for the phone I had (Motorola cliq)

My current software was the 1.6 and there was a new one available but it was a bit more of a to do to get it uploaded onto the phone - a 35 minute "to do" to be specific.

After lots of reading, downloading and waiting - I finally got the update on the phone and was very excited....for 20 minutes - because after those 20 minutes the phone became so very, very, verrrrrry slow that it became almost unusable.

I spent most of the rest of the remaining week or so complaining (mostly to the friend that talked me out of the stupid purchase)

She finally got sick of hearing me whine and said "Just solve the problem".

Simple words - but they somehow resonated loudly at the time.

She was right. If I fixed the problem - my frustration would cease.

So I did.

How? I called T-mobile and thru much trial and error and many different technical support reps I finally got the problem fixed....

By downgrading back to the phone I had when I started the whole thing.

I now am so very happy to have back what I had originally - and now realize I never needed a new phone at all.

So, whether its a piece of tech or a good friend - appreciate whats in front of you or you may end up with something you not only dont need - but that doesnt work as well as what you had.

Peace
