‘Green Lantern’: Geoffrey Rush said his alien has…torso appeal?: "

Why did Oscar-winning actor Geoffrey Rush sign on to portray Tomar Re, the wise alien in “Green Lantern” who looks a bit like a reptilian chicken?
“When the role came up they asked if I was interested and they told me about him but I wasn’t sure so I told them to send the artwork with the script,” said Rush, who turns 60 in July. “I saw the artwork and I liked it. I identified with the torso.”
Um, huh?

“Yes, I identified with the torso, the look of him,” Rush said with a chuckle. “That was enough at this point because I have some expertise in this. I felt experienced enough after doing an owl in ‘Legend of the Guardians‘ and a Koala in ‘Magic Pudding‘ back in Australia and a pelican in ‘Finding Nemo‘ to make the call. I asked, ‘What is this guy?’ They said, he’s part-fish, part-bird, maybe a bit of lizard, and you don’t have to go through five hours of makeup to play him. That was good enough for me.”

Despite a peckish appearance, Tomar Re is a voice of calm reason on Oa, the planet where he meets Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), the first human called to serve in the cosmic peacekeeping force called the Green Lantern Corps.

Rush never visited the Louisiana set of the film — his character was a pure digital creation and the actor, who’s also currently on screen as Barbossa in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” didn’t even sign on until late in the game.

“It came out of nowhere. It was just six or seven weeks before ‘Pirates’ came out [in May],” Rush said. “I said to my agent, ‘Wait, ‘Green Lantern,’ haven’t they already made this movie?’ He said they, ‘Yes they have but there’s one CG part left.’ I didn’t know the Green Lantern comics at all. I was a Superman reader. I was on that other side of DC. Someone told me that there’s a connection to Superman, that in an early edition of the Green Lantern comics, Tomar Re was the envoy to Krypton. That was fascinating to me. I like those sort of overlaps. I always liken it to the fact that Sam Drucker [played by Frank Cady] was the storekeeper in both ‘Petticoat Junction‘ and ‘Green Acres.’ Tomar Re is the Sam Drucker of the DC Universe.”
