Wicked Cool Transformers Concept Art
Wicked Cool Transformers Concept Art: "
Did you see Transformers: Dark of the Moon? Not a perfect film — not by a long shot. But certainly a lot better than the dreck that was Revenge of the Fallen. Whether you loved or hated the movie, one thing you can’t argue is that the giant robots look frickin’ awesome. Check out these amazing digital renderings of Megatron, the Wreckers, the Dreads, and lots more, created by artist Josh Nizzi as concept art for the film. Included: an unused design for the classic character Ultra Magnus.
Okay, I’ll come clean and disclose that I have alternative motives for showing you these. Josh Nizzi, the artist who created these stunning images, is a friend of mine. He lives right here in my home state of North Carolina, and he and I have even collaborated on a few projects that are still in the works. Every time I see him, he shows me some of his amazing artwork, and I’m blown away every single time.
Since getting the job to work on Transformers – he first joined the concept design team for Revenge of the Fallen (if memory serves, I believe this is the image that got him that job)– he’s gone on to create a whole slew of covers for IDW’s Transformers comic books, and work on such upcoming films as Battleship (a kooky-sounding VFX-fest based on the board game), 2012′s The Amazing Spider-Man reboot, and Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, which is filming now.
Take a look at these incredible images, and tell me this guy doesn’t have a huge future with Hollywood. See lots more of his Transformers 3 artwork here.

The Secret Origin Of The Transformers (And Why Jim Shooter’s To Thank)
The Secret Origin Of The Transformers (And Why Jim Shooter’s To Thank): "
Hey, Michael Bay! You know those Robots In Disguise that you’ve made three movies about, happily increasing your profile and paycheck each time? Turns out, you have Marvel Comics and former editor-in-chief Jim Shooter to thank for them:
It’s a two-part story (Part one is here, part two here) that lets Shooter offer his side of the events leading up to the creation of Optimus Prime, Megatron, et al, including which Marvel editor did such a bad job coming up with names and backstory that his work was tossed entirely, and the troubles that the properties caused between Marvel Comics and Marvel Productions, the then-existing animation side of the company. Who’d have thought that so much drama could’ve been caused by a toy line? Well, aside from Mr. Bay, of course…

Some months later, the Hasbro exec who was Marvel’s main contact, Bob Prupis, came to my office. He pulled a few toy vehicles out of his bag and proceeded to open and unfold them into ROBOTS.
They were bigger and much more complex than the Mysterions. Different Japanese technology, same general idea.
Hasbro, he said, had the rights to the technology and toys based upon it. The problem, he said was story. He said that the Japanese storyline associated with the toys wasn’t useful. Japanese kids, apparently, don’t require much justification. Cars become robots, robots become cars. Well, of course they do. What do you mean, “why?”
(P.S. To this day I’ve never read or seen any of the Japanese storyline.)
American kids, he thought would like to know why. Did I think we could develop this toy concept for comics, animation and other entertainment the way we developed G.I. JOE?
Sure.

12 Homemade Life-Size Transformers
12 Homemade Life-Size Transformers: "
In honor of Transformers: Dark of the Moon opening this week, I present to you 12 life-sized Transformers sculptures and statues. Every one is made to scale (aka, they’re huge) or close to scale, and they’re all made by fans. Prepare to be amazed.

Commissioned to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Pittsburg, the “city of bridges,” this giant robot sculpture is made from parts of bridges, by artist Glenn Kaino. [Image source.]
I’m a little reluctant to include this one, as it almost looks like a good Photoshop job. But everything I could find said that “Bendy Bus Prime” is the real deal. It’s made from over 100 bus parts, from England’s famous red buses that bend in the middle, and it’s been dubbed “the very first British Transformer.” [Image source.]

Tom Rhoads of Lemoore, California created this 18-foot-tall replica in his front yard, using parts of a real VW Bug. Before you laugh at its cartoony nature, remember that this is serious nostalgia for a whole generation of fans. Without old school Transformers like this, there’d be no Michael Bay movies. More pictures at the link. [Image source.]

Three friends from Nanjing, China spent $8,000 American dollars to turn a Citroen C2 into a Transformer that they’ve named “X2.” This is just the first of many Chinese creations you’ll see on this list… The Chinese really love their Transformers! [Image source.]
A family in Cleveland, Ohio displayed these impressive homemade statues on their front lawn for Halloween. [Image source.]

Guan Yu was a historic general from China’s Three Kingdoms period, who’s become a pop culture icon and hero in modern times. This statue is made to resemble him and his signature bladed staff, from an old Jie Fang model truck. It stands 30 feet tall and weighs 4 tons. [Image source.]
Another Chinese fan build, this one a life-sized recreation of Megatron in his Revenge of the Fallen “alien tank” form. If this guy rides your bumper… let him pass. [Image source.]

I’ve shown you this one before (along with another even bigger one that Noemi pointed out from Shenyang City), but it’s entirely worthy of inclusion here because of it’s awesome location placement: it’s right in front of the infamous “Bird’s Nest” arena from the ’08 Olympics. It’s made from recycled car parts. [Image source.]

Couldn’t find any details about this one, such as where it was located, but it’s one darn impressive ice sculpture. Tons of detail in this thing. See more photos at the link. [Image source.]

A Chinese original made out of scrap metal from other cars. The builder uses it — and a few others he’s built — as a promotional tool for his scrap metal business. [Image source.]

Art shop “Studio Re-Creation” takes your favorite personal belongings and re-shapes them into something even more special. This one is a human-sized robot statue made from one of the sculptors’ first car, a Lada Samara Diva. [Image source.]

One more Chinese creation, a robot sculpture on display, made from a VW Passat. Looks pretty nifty, but where’s its head? [Image source.]

Transformers: Beginner's Guide To Shockwave & Sentinel Prime
Transformers: Beginner's Guide To Shockwave & Sentinel Prime: "

Shockwave did indeed come from the conceptual starting
point of what the world’s favorite Vulcan would be like if his unwavering
rationality was directed toward malevolent ends instead of benevolent ones. And
just as Spock, for all his wondrous intellect, still played second fiddle to
Captain Kirk, so too did Shockwave obediently do the bidding of Megatron. In
some iterations anyway. If you thought that keeping up with the
respective continuities of Marvel and DC was a tall order, you’ll likely be
overwhelmed by all the pieces of the fractal mosaic that is as the TRANSFORMERS franchise. Characters’ alliances,
relationships and very natures change more drastically over all the iterations than any of the robot-to-vehicle transformations.

In most versions, Shockwave's the
commander of the Decepticons’ military forces, yet still somehow subservient to
Megatron. His appreciation of that subservience differs from version to
version, though. In some, his cold logic concludes that Megatron’s the most
suitable leader, and he is thus content in his position. In others, that logic
deems Megatron unfit and, because of that, he's always scheming to usurp him with a tenacity
much like Starscream’s. Considering how
he’s identified as the main antagonist of DARK OF THE MOON, my guess is that his characterization will lean more to the latter in the movie. One facet of Shockwave that remains constant,
however, is that he’ll transform into an alien vehicle instead of something
that blends into Earthly scenery. Originally, he turned into a giant Cybertronian cannon
but, in this movie, he’ll be turning into a Cybertronian tank. Added mobility
makes for a step up, perhaps?
Optimus holds as leader of the Autobots. It’s sort-of like calling him
Captain Optimus or Lord Optimus. At least, it is in most iterations of TRANSFORMERS.
The last movie, REVENGE OF THE FALLEN,
reconceived “Prime” as something of a clan name, with Optimus being the last of
the Primes (at least that’s how I interpreted that whole “robot heaven” scene.) We’ll
see how that’ll be reconciled with the appearance of Optimus’ direct
predecessor, Sentinel Prime, in DARK OF
THE MOON.
This particular bit of lore was first explored in the ’86 animated
TRANSFORMERS movie when it was
revealed that Optimus’ right of command was given to him by a Matrix of
Leadership he carried around inside his chest. It was fitting that this venerable object was held right where the robot’s heart would
be, as it basically served as deus ex machina that would “light the Autobot’s
darkest hour” and remedy whatever overwhelming problem was present when opened
by their leader at the proper time.
After getting killed by Megatron (at the
time, anyway) Optimus bequeathed the Matrix to his second-in-command, Ultra Magnus,
who ultimately couldn’t use it because, even with his courage and nobility, he
wasn’t worthy of leadership. The real chosen one was the young punk Hot Rod, who
grew into the larger and more powerful Rodimus Prime when he wielded the Matrix
at the precisely right moment. Later storylines revealed that Optimus had been known as Orion Pax prior to undergoing a similar trial, and that he had inherited the
Matrix from Sentinel Prime (who was once known as Sentinel Minor.)

As I mentioned, the live-action TRANSFORMERS have changed this particular part of the mythos significantly. Therefore, I wouldn’t expect the lineage of Primes to spin out as I’ve just described.
Sentinel Prime will be revealed to have crashed the Autobot’s Ark on the Moon
in the 60s and to have perhaps been hibernating amidst all the highly-valuable wreckage
there over all the decades. For all we know, he could very likely be Optimus’ father or
grandfather or uncle or what have you, as the Autobot Matrix has already been show and it
has little to do with succession of leadership.
Here's a tidbit: things come full circle a bit with Leonard Nimoy’s involvement.
He was actually the voice of Galvatron in ’86 animated TRANSFORMERS movie, replacing the earlier model of Megatron who was
voiced Frank Welker. And guess who Welker’s
playing in DARK OF THE MOON? Yep,
Shockwave. One shall stand and one shall fall, right?

SHOCKWAVE
There’s something scarier about a villain who’s utterly logical about everything he does; whose decisions aren’t tempered by any of the self-defeating mood swings of your typical narcissistic megalomaniac. Scorpius from FARSCAPE is one of my favorite villains of science-fiction (I even put him on my Top Five Evil Aliens list on Screened) for precisely those inhuman qualities. I thought it was so innovative how that show envisioned him as an “evil Mr. Spock” but, after doing some research for this guide, I learned that the creators of TRANSFORMERS beat FARSCAPE to the punch by about 15 years.point of what the world’s favorite Vulcan would be like if his unwavering
rationality was directed toward malevolent ends instead of benevolent ones. And

New Transformers 3 Trailer is Explosively Awesome
New Transformers 3 Trailer is Explosively Awesome: "

The teaser trailer brought us to the first moon landing and the Super Bowl TV spot introduced us to the action. Now, the first full trailer and second official theatrical trailer for Transformers: Dark of the Moon is online, bringing with it the story.
Seemingly everyone involved with the Transformers movies thus far, from star Shia LaBeouf to director Michael Bay, has admitted to the faults of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and promise much, much better with their third and final go. We cannot deny that Transformers 3 looks promising, but we haven’t had a look into the story and characters yet… until now.
While the Apollo 11 teaser trailer gave us a very unique intro to the story for the next Transformers, it was the brief Super Bowl spot ...
