CBS Shows Off Their Official PADD App: "


The other year we wrote about the LCARS Reader app for Apple’s iOS. I absolutely loved the concept, but it wasn’t long before the novelty wore off and I found myself deleting the app altogether. I’m not sure if it was just that I found the interface to be slightly buggy and difficult to navigate, or that it seemed to lack the polish I’ve become accustomed to with properly licensed products — maybe a bit of both. It’s been over a year, and CBS has finally got around to creating their own LCARS interface with their official Star Trek PADD app. Took them long enough, am I right?



While it lacks the ability to customize content, the app functions as a virtual compendium spanning the entire televised series and covering topics like cast, crew, aliens, ships, food, medical, scientific knowledge, and more. However, it lacks information regarding the recent film and expanded universe, so don’t expect to see any topics relating to your favorite Pocket Books series while browsing the app. The app also has some authentic sound effects, but those might get on your nerves after awhile. The app also carries an unfortunate $5 price tag. To me, it seem like a bit much to ask for information you could find for free online. Again, you’ll be paying for the novelty and it’s only a matter of time before that wears off.

Don’t Call It A Comeback, Star Trek Has Never Been Away: "
Maybe I’m showing off my own fanboy nature a little bit too much here, but: Yes please. I’m not a massive Trekkie/Trekker, but I really liked the JJ Abrams reboot, and tend to like IDW’s Trek comics for the most part (Especially underrated, weirdly enough, are the John Byrne series. Who knew?), so the idea of a continuation of the movie written by Mike Johnson under the careful eye of movie screenwriter Bob Orci seems like a very good one indeed, even if I’m unsure about the idea of the storylines adapting episodes of the original television series.

It does make me wonder, though: Is Star Trek the oldest comics adaptation outside of Disney still running? There were plenty of cross-media comics before Trek, of course, but does Trek outlast all of them? I’m trying to work out if things like The Lone Ranger or Warlord of Mars count, considering their lengthy hiatuses, unlike Trek, which has been fairly continuously published in comics since, when, the late 1960s? Help me out in the comments here, please: What comic adaptations are older than Trek, but still being published?

The future of J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek sequel has been a mystery for a while now. The movie industry has turned into a brand name driven environment where as soon as a film makes ten bucks over its budget, a release date gets set for the sequel. And it’s usually a date that’s closer than the filmmakers would like. So what’s been going on with Star Trek? Are we going to get a sequel? And if not, why not? Who does J.J. Abrams think he is? Recently a clue surfaced in the ongoing mystery when co-writer/producer Roberto Orci said that while a script wasn’t finished, they had a big ol’ outline done, and they were just waiting for Abrams to get done with his current projects before they pushed production into high gear. And now a second clue has come to light.

While talking to Cinema Blend, Abrams himself confirmed that Star Trek 2 would in fact be his next project; and he even talked a bit about its release date and whether or not he’s looking to make it in 3D. He started off by saying, “The next thing we’re working on, and hopefully we’ll be able to pass information out sooner or later, is the next Star Trek.” When asked about the too close for comfort release date that Paramount has the film penciled in for, June 29^th 2012, Abrams was less than committal. “I care much more that it be good than it be ready,” he said, “I’m, obviously doing everything I can to make sure that schedules don’t get screwed up. But I don’t think anyone wants a movie on time that’s not worth your time.”

Twelve months from now seems like a ridiculously small window to put together a gigantic, effects driven film like a Star Trek sequel. It sounds like Abrams is going to play hard ball with the studio about giving him enough time to make everything come together right, and I certainly hope that they give in to reason on that matter. Too often these days we see big summer films scrambling to get their effects work done last minute, resulting in a less than perfect product showing up in theaters. And I don’t even want to think about what might come of a rushed screenwriting process. While there were a lot of things that I liked about the first Star Trek, there were also plenty of clunky moments that could have been smoothed over with another rewrite or two.

While he seems to be adamant about not rushing the movie into theaters, Abrams seems to be a little more flexible on the question of whether or not the Star Trek sequel will be in 3D. When asked about the possibility, the director said, “I’m not yet considering it, but you know, I haven’t gotten any phone call from people in suits. I know what’s good for me.” Recently we’ve been seeing signs that the 3D craze may finally be waning, but it sounds like if Paramount execs decide it is in the best interest for Star Trek to go 3D, then Abrams will soon be in the market for some 3D cameras. Have we seen a bunch of lens flares in 3D yet? Could be promising.

While most of the heavyweight Hollywood titles due to hit theaters next summer – like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises - have either recently begun filming or will in the very near future, Star Trek 2 has yet to reach that point in its development. Paramount has nonetheless already committed to the sci-fi sequel by going ahead and financing pre-production on the project.
Co-screenwriter/producer Roberto Orci revealed a few months ago that he, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof had not yet completed the Star Trek 2 screenplay. Jump ahead to the present and Orci is saying that this remains the case – however, pre-production is still pressing ahead, even though the film doesn’t technically have a director onboard just yet.

Zoe Saldana Hints At The Return Of Romulans In Star Trek 2?: "In a recent interview with Empire Online, Zoe 'Uhura' Saldana has expressed interest in there being more physical contact between Uhura and Spock (played by Zachary Quinto in 2009's Star Trek). She also reveals that she'd want to fight the Romulans (the villains of the first film), hinting that they just might make a a return in the film.



'She told Empire Online: 'I can maybe tell you what I'd like to see happen. For Spock and Uhura to really hook up. Or to get to do whatever physical activities. Kick some butt, some Romulan butt.'
