New ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ Images Feature Blomkvist & Salander

New ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ Images Feature Blomkvist & Salander:
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movie poster

David Fincher’s adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling novel The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (which is NOT a remake of the Swedish film) is coming at us this holiday season, and Columbia Pictures is releasing some new images from the film.

These first images are understandably focused on the film’s two protagonists: Disgraced journalists Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) and his unlikely ally, Goth hacker extraordinaire, Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara).
While Craig as Blomkvist seems like a logical bit of casting (although it can be argued the actor is too good-looking to fit Larsson’s description of Blomkvist), the casting of Mara as the hard-as-nails Salander is a bit more ironic, given that the actress is actually a wealthy heiress – pretty much the furthest thing from Salander’s traumatic origins. Still, director David Fincher has had nothing but praise for his leading lady, which speaks to Mara’s skill as an actress, if she’s been able to convincingly inhabit a skin so foreign to her own.
At the very least, she looks the part of Salander – arguably in more fitting fashion than Swedish actress Noomi Rapace did in the Swedish film version.
Judge for yourself based on the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo teaser trailer and the images below:

For as much love as Rapace gets for her portrayal of this now-iconic anti-heroine, I always thought she looked a bit too thick-boned (relatively speaking) and old to be a spot-on representation of Salander, who Larsson always described as being almost anorexic thin with sparse features, almost like a young teenage model who had a contrasting aura of strength and intelligence that seemed totally mismatched with her frail body type. We won’t know for sure if Mara can convey those abstract qualities of Salander in proper manner until we see some footage from the film, but as far as physical appearance goes, she has nailed the character better than Rapace, in my opinion.
Taking things a step further: for as much love as the Swedish version of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo gets, the movie took serious liberties with the telling of Larsson’s tale, including some major changes to character relationships (Blomkvist and his parade of lovers, in particular). While remakes and reboots are dirty little buzz words for a lot of movie fans right now, the baby should not be thrown out with the bath water: There is a lot of room for Fincher’s film to be a much different (better?) vision of this dark and disturbing tale.
We’ll know for sure when The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo hits theaters on December 21, 2011.

‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’: Character Profiles & Score Samples

‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’: Character Profiles & Score Samples: "
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trailer with Rooney Mara

An official site for David Fincher’s adaptation of the best-selling novel The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has gone live, revealing detailed profiles for eighteen characters in the Swedish Noir thriller.

You can also now listen to an excerpt of Oscar-winning Social Network duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ soundtrack for Dragon Tattoo, which is already coyly selling itself as the “feel bad movie” of the upcoming holiday season.

There seems to still be some confusion as to whether or not Fincher’s Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a direct remake of Niels Arden Oplev’s Swedish-language movie, or a fresh interpretation of the original source material (a la last year’s True Grit). Screenwriter Steve Zaillian has made it known that he intentionally avoided watching Oplev’s film while penning the script, so as to not be influenced by that version’s approach to streamlining the narrative material in Stieg Larsson’s popular novel. Likewise, the Dragon Tattoo teaser suggest the film will visually resemble Fincher’s previous work -- and not the Swedish adaptation.

On that note -- those of you who are completely unfamiliar with Girl With the Dragon Tattoocan get up to speed by checking out the new character profiles, which provide mug shots and succinct backstory information on the various players in the film. By and large, these areSPOILER-FREE.
Check out the profiles for six pivotal characters from Dragon Tattoo in the gallery below:

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo score

For those of you who have been anxiously awaiting the chance to hear what Reznor and Ross have cooked up for Fincher’s latest macabre murder mystery, here’s a preview of their score for Dragon Tattoo:
This particular piece has a very moody and foreboding sound to it, what with the synthesized wails and the occasional xylophone chimes. It’s should appropriately heighten the sense of unease that lingers throughout Dragon Tattoo, in between the bursts of disturbingly graphic violence and brutality that occasionally punctuate the story. Judging by Reznor and Ross’ previous collaboration on The Social Network, there should also be some catchily kinetic and heart-pounding themes included on the Dragon Tattoo soundtrack - for the brief bits of suspenseful action that pop up throughout the film.
As an additional treat: here’s an audio-only version of Trent Reznor and Karen O’s cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”, which was used quite effectively in the Dragon Tattooteaser trailer:

Daniel Craig Talks ‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’

Daniel Craig Talks ‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’: "
Daniel Craig on Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movie

While he’s currently prepping to reprise his steely-faced turn as agent 007 in the next James Bond movie, Daniel Craig will be showing up no less than four times on the big screen before the year is out. Arguably, his most scrutinized upcoming role is that of crusading Swedish journalist Mikael Blomkvist in David Fincher’s new film version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Craig sat down recently with Esquire to chat about a variety of subjects, pertaining to both his personal and professional life. However, it was the actor’s comments about Fincher’s next dark work of cinematic art that were perhaps the most intriguing.
Fincher’s English-language take on Stieg Larsson’s best-selling murder mystery novel will be R-Rated, which has been a given since it was announced that the filmmaker responsible ...

Fincher’s ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ Trailer Gets Legits

Fincher’s ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ Trailer Gets Legits: "

A couple days ago a red band trailer for David Fincher’s upcoming adaptation of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” hit the Internet and made the rounds among movie blogs and message boards. It wasn’t really clear if it was an unintentional leak, or if it was put out to look as an intentional leak as a bit of viral marketing that fit in well with the hacker status of the female protagonist, or maybe if it was just a trailer released without much fanfare due to its pseudo NSFW status. But none of that really matters anymore. Now we’ve got an officially released trailer for the film that looks a heck of a lot like the leaked one, but is all high definition and pretty, and doesn’t have any bits that are naughty (sorry, side boob lovers).

So what does this trailer have in store for us? Nothing shocking really; but enough to get my blood pumping anyways. This little bit of advertising is quick, kinetic, and full of energy. It’s got a hip re-imagining of a Led Zeppelin classic, a very digital, very typical of David Fincher aesthetic, very gorgeous production design. Also, it probably can’t help but remind me a lot of that one movie I saw… you know, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The trailer is a reminder that I’ve already heard this story, already solved this mystery, already lived alongside these characters, and it can’t help but feel awfully familiar.

But it looks awfully damn pretty too. Reading about this project has done little more than make me shrug my shoulders and say, “meh, another Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movie, who cares?” I just saw one of those, and it was pretty good even. Why do I need another one? But seeing images from it here, this made the reality of the situation finally hit me. This isn’t just another Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, it’s another David Fincher movie! Coming hot off of The Social Network, and seeing how slick and gorgeous this trailer looks, that’s not something I can sneeze at. Plus it seems like they’re shooting for making this one a heck of a lot sexier than the Swedish original. Who am I to argue with that? Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think.

Nice to see it clearly, eh?
