A few weeks ago we learned that director Kenneth Branagh would not return to direct the inevitable Thor sequel, leaving Marvel on the hunt for a replacement. While the studio has been hiring a lot of big name directors with geek cred as of late (ie. Joss Whedon, Shane Black) this time around it appears that they are opting for someone a little less familiar. According to Variety, the man they want for Thor 2 is Irish TV director Brian Kirk. Although Kirk has been directing television episodes since 2004, Thor 2 would mark his big screen directorial debut.
While it might seem a bit risky to hand a major sequel like this over to someone who has never made a movie before, Kirk is no doubt being hired based on his recent directorial credits for several episodes of HBO's Game of Thrones. In addition to directing three episodes of Game of Thrones, he has also worked on such shows as Dexter, Boardwalk Empire and The Tudors.
While Thor is clearly based in a fantasy world, it's a fair bit more cartoony than Game of Thrones. I wonder if this means they want to go for something a little more gritty for Thor 2? At any rate, I actually liked Branagh's direction in the first Thor film and I'm a bit disappointed that he won't return, but I won't lose any sleep over it. What do you think? Are you looking forward to Thor 2, and does Brian Kirk sound like a decent choice to direct?"
