Batman is one of the coolest superheroes around. He doesn't have superpowers but has the ability to outthink his opponents and prepare for just about any outcome. In the pages of Detective Comics, we've seen the re-introduction of Commissioner Gordon's son, James Gordon Jr. With a backstory filled with mystery and suspicions over his true nature, we were never really sure what his real intentions were. Could it be possible that one of Batman's greatest allies could have a son that is capable of pure evil?
James Jr.'s origin was different than the typical villain. Usually we know right away who is bad and who is not. Through flashbacks, we saw that the Commissioner had some doubts but because he never had any proof and because it was his son, the possibility of him having any dark intentions wasn't possible. It was Barbara that was always creeped out by him and suspicious.
With the final issue of Detective Comics on sale now, Dick Grayson, as Batman, finds himself going up against a villain like none other. Writer Scott Snyder has said that the Batman Universe will remain relatively unchanged after September's relaunch but whether or not James Jr. has a place depends on events in Detective Comics #881. We know not everything will be the same. With seeing everything he is capable of, James Gordon Jr. needs to be allowed to survive the relaunch and return as a major thorn in the side of Batman, Dick and the Gordons. Some of the reasons will be layed out below. There will be some minor spoilers but nothing that will ruin issue #881 (which you should have already read by now since it's so good).
Let's start with what James Gordon Jr. is. He is a psychopath. He is also an extremely intelligent person. The two make a deadly combination. One of the first flashbacks we saw revolved around a friend of Barbara's that was bothered by his behavior. Her disappearance was never explained and Commissioner Gordon was still haunted years later, in the present, in trying to figure out what happened.
When he returned to Gotham and had a conversation with his father, he told him about a run in he had where someone spit on him. As James Jr. calmly told the tale, you could see the Commissioner's suspicion rising as he demanded his son tell him what he did.
James Jr. is a creepy guy. He knows how to push people's buttons. He can get into their heads and knows exactly what to say to raise their doubts without giving anything away. Commissioner Gordon is usually calm and level-headed. Part of it is due to James Jr. being his son but the fact that he so easily managed to rattle him says something. Getting your foes to become unhinged or unstable is key in a psychological battle.
In Detective Comics #879 we saw the Joker somehow managed to break out of Arkham Asylum (once again) just in time for someone close to Commissioner Gordon to suffer from a Joker-inspired attack. Is this coincidence or could James Gordon Jr be responsible? (Read issue 881 to find out). Again, we have that doubt that surrounds James Jr. He appears to be a simple young man but more and more he shows the sinister things he is capable of orchestrating.
The final thing that makes James Jr. a worthy villain is his relationships with Commissioner Gordon, Barbara and even Dick. If he's been able to sit back in the shadows for all these years and fool everyone to what he actually is, what else has he done? What else does he know? Knowledge is power and he would have access to information that the typical Bat-villain never could.
James Gordon Jr. isn't your typical Bat-villain. He could be seen as a new breed in Batman's rogues gallery. He has shown us glimpses of what he is capable of. Different characters close to the Bat-family and his own have been put in dire situations. James Jr. was in complete control with them and has shown he could easily kill them at any point he wished. He has managed to do what very few Bat-villains have been able to do. He has infiltrated the inner lives of many and that, along with his being a complete psychopath is what makes him an extremely dangerous and deadly foe.
James Jr.'s fate might not be completely clear when the relaunched Bat-titles debut in September. For the sake of having some incredibly intense stories with one of the deadliest new villains we've seen in a long time, let's hope James Jr. has a future in DC's 'The New 52.'
What's the Verdict?
With September's relaunch, Scott Snyder will be writing Bruce as Batman in the pages of Batman. The first issue goes on sale September 21. Can we just sit around and wait to find out what James Jr's fate is? Will we see him again anytime soon? I asked Mr. Snyder himself and this was his response.
James will make a (brief) appearance in Batman #1. As for his presence in Gotham, he's someone I have some fun (dark and twisted) long-term plans for :)
Now we definitely have something to look forward to!
