Sherwood Schwartz, the writer/producer responsible for iconic television series like Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch, passed away this morning in Los Angeles. He was 94.
With the plethora of reality shows and online streaming content, television today is not quite what it was when Schwartz created the two hit shows in the 1960's but his impact on contemporary pop culture is undeniable. Before LOST abandoned an entire cast on a desert island, there was the motley crew of Gilligan's Island. The Brady Bunch introduces us to a whole new dynamic of large families, second marriages and sibling rivalry. And don't forget those addicting theme songs--and he was responsible for penning the memorable lyrics to Gilligan's Island.
How about America's classic TV family of blondes and brunettes?
Rest in peace, Sherwood Schwartz. Without you, singing around the campfire or on long schoolbus rides for field trips wouldn't be the same.
