The ‘300’ Sequel-Prequel Gets a New Title and a Director… Short List: "


We’ve known for a while that since Zack Snyder is directing Man of Steel, somebody else will have to come on board to direct the sequel to 300 and that it probably won’t end up being called Xerxes, like Frank Miller’s graphic novel sequel was. Things seem to be progressing on both those fronts. We now have word of what that new title is going to be and that the suits have narrowed the candidates to direct down to two choices.

First, the title. Though this sequel will still be a detailing of the character Xerxes’ rise to the position of being a God-like being, the people in charge have decided to give the film a title that more blatantly ties it to the original than just calling it Xerxes. The new title is going to be 300: The Battle of Artemisia. I see this as a good move. There have been a lot of 300 imitators, in both look and content over the past few years, and mainstream audiences might have become confused as to whether or not any of them have had an actual connection to the ultra-successful first film. This clearly marks this new film as a direct sequel, which will probably coax some people into the theaters even if Snyder is gone this time around.

What’s the word on Snyder’s replacements? It is apparently down to either Noam Murro or Jaume Collet-Serra. Murro is primarily a commercial director who is best known for his ad campaign for the ultra-popular video game Halo. That might not sound like the best pedigree for a possible feature director, but seeing as 300 was basically a giant video game anyways I can see where he would have become a choice. Collet-Serra was the director of Unknown, the Liam Neeson vehicle that was a sleeper hit for Warner Bros., so it’s pretty clear why they would want to put him on another project. Personally, I don’t really have a dog in the race. I can’t see myself sitting through a sequel to 300 unless I get forced to, but I know that the first film does have its fans.
