Etsy Made Me Do It: Woodwork by spandexsplinters

Etsy Made Me Do It: Woodwork by spandexsplinters: "
Last week’s Etsy Made Me Do It focused on the Mighty Blonde One, Thor. Once a week I sift through the millions of Etsy listings to find the best in geek chic for Blog@ readers. This week I decided to showcase one Etsy user whose crafts I found particularly delightful. His username is spandexsplinters and I give you his wooden superheroes and villains.

“The Joker. Batman’s long time arch enemy. Not sure if he runs in fear or from The Joker’s Halitosis,” writes spandexsplinters. This Sinister Hand Carved Wooden Joker is 5.5 x 1 inch, carved out of basswood and finished with acrylic paints. $25.

Besides the uniqueness of the items themselves (and their descriptions), the thing I love about them are the hilarious names spandexsplinters gave them. For instance, if this Aloof Batman ($20) is not to your liking, try the Surly Batman ($25) or the Somber Batman ($20).

Wonder Woman didn’t get a descriptive title though I’d venture to call her Grumpy Wonder Woman after reading spandexsplinter’s description. “Wonder Woman is a bit pouty because she finally found where she left her invisible jet, but couldn’t find her keys.” $25 for the Amazon Princess.

The Large Hand Carved Wooden Doom is a delightful depiction of the Marvel villain. The artist lists his likes as: Sunsets, Stainless Steel Polish, Cuddling, World Domination, and Family Feud and his dislikes as: Merlot, Close-Minded People, Eff-ing Reed Richards, Spiders, and The View. Standing quite a bit larger than the other statues, Dr. Doom measures 11.75 x 2.75 inches and sells for $60.

And last but not least, Bad Attitude Wooden Wolverine. Pretty appropriate considering spandexsplinters describes his carving with his knives as “SHNIKT.” Wolverine is yours for $25.

Definitely check out the other characters this guy has to offer, Iron Man, Green Lantern and Silver Surfer to name a few.

As always, bear in mind, since Etsy is a craft website and not a commercial, mass-market dealer, items are almost always one-of-a-kind or in very limited availability. When you see something you like, buy it. It may not be there the next time you surf round. (Yes, it’s a very dangerous site for your wallet.) Also, since most items are created individually, many sellers are willing to customize something specifically to suit your needs. Just ask!
