It almost slipped my mind, to be honest. I am pretty sure that most of you are more on the ball than I am, though, and that you knew even before today that May 25 is the designated day for geeks to show off their colors. This is a real holiday – we are not making it up. Check out last year’s post about Geek Pride Day to read the manifesto and your responsibilities as a geek – if you don’t already know.
So what’s going on in geekdom to show the rest of the world just how proud geeks are to be geeks? For one, the guys at GeekTech1 say they have some fun stories up their sleeves to mark the occasion. They also pose several questions to geeks (my answers in italics):
- What got you into geekdom? I honestly don’t know. Am I into geekdom?
- What’s your favorite part of being a geek? Assuming I am a geek, my favorite part would be getting together with geek friends and discussing fantasy/sci-fi stories and characters and pitting them against each other. Think: ultimate battle between MacGyver and Chuck Norris. (Though I am not sure the latter will appreciate being thrown into such a discussion.)
- Any nerdy role models?Does MacGyver count? Spock!
- What’s the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done?Nerd or geek? This has got me stumped.
- What makes a person a geek?
- What’s your favorite geeky movie?
- What’s your favorite geeky book?
- If you were a sci-fi or fantasy character, which one would you be and why?
Whatever you decide to do – you may even decide NOT to join in – remember that today is all about not being embarrassed to let others know about your unconventional interests. After all, isn’t that what a geek is all about? Being passionate about some thing/s and not caring if others think it’s cool or not. Me, I am going to continue reading Ender’s Game – Children of the Mind tonight.
Happy Geek Pride Day everyone! And don’t forget to share your answers in the comments!
