What Dwayne McDuffie Meant To Me

I am not someone who stands in awe of many.

Very infrequently am I ever simply a genuine fan of not only a person's resume but outlook & modesty.

That is a very tall order to fill - Dwayne McDuffie filled that order.

Writer, Producer & animator Dwayne McDuffie was what young minorities don't have alot of - A Hero.

He showed you that in an industry saturated with a particular view - yours could also be seen.

And not the view from just a slum - Though a slum was not an avoided arena -

Through his creator own Comic Company MILESTONE he told stories from all perspectives.

You understood that not all the heroes of color out there were wearing tiaras and speaking in slang.

That all of their names did not have to start with a color.

But just as he didn't make stories about color a focal point - Never did he shy away from them.

Dwayne wrote character driven stories that made you care about 2 dimensional drawings as if they were your friends in trouble.

He penned one the first interracial kisses in an ongoing children's TV show and no one lost their minds (John Stewart & Hawkgirl). He juggled a huge cast without making it look like a struggle while entertaining both young & old.

Dwayne McDuffie made me believe that things were possible. Some of you wont understand what that can mean.

I don't want to run on and diminish him by saying more than needs to be said.

Goodbye Mr. McDuffie - things aren't as bright as they were yesterday.
